‘The sinner invokes, provokes, and invites death. It is certain that the question is not one of purely spiritual death, but of the fact that evil tends toward non-existence, to the violation and suppression of all life… The soul is dependent upon the Creator, it has not an absolute immortality. It is certain that it has been created and constituted with a view to obtaining an eternal life; but it loses the live that is personal to it in the measure in which it becomes a stranger to the truth, to love, and to salvation. It follows that with the progress of sin the soul advances toward the destruction that awaits it in hell; in other terms, toward its death…. There is nothing in the Word of God, or in the condition of the kingdom of God, to require the admission of the perpetual existence of the damned, the indestructibility of an individual incapable of becoming holy and happy….. The notion of annihilation is evident in the passage which represents death and hell as being cast into the lake burning with fire and brimstone. There, in fact, death and hell cease absolutely to exist…. ‘The wicked receive their recompense in the earth. They ‘shall be as stubble; and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the Lord of hosts.’ Some are destroyed as in a moment, while others suffer many days. All are punished ‘according to their deeds.’ The sins of the righteous having been transferred to Satan, he is made to suffer not only for his own rebellion, but for all the sins which he has caused God’s people to commit. His punishment is to be far greater than that of those whom he has deceived. After all have perished who fell by his deceptions, he is still to live and suffer on. In the cleansing flames the wicked are also destroyed, rot and branch – Satan the root, his followers the branches.
